Ack! It's July!

I have come to the conclusion that I have too many interests. Too many things demand my time that I'm at a loss at where to start or what to do.

I like sewing, but my mojo for that has faded somewhat. I'm excited by the prospect of some new gowns from different eras, but at the same time, challenges can be had with my current century/country of study. Like hand sewing and period techniques explored by [info]attack_laurel. How awesome is all of that?

I like cooking, and the researching aspect has me pretty excited. I picked up a cookbook in Gettysburg that is a compilation of recipes from the Lee family. Personal anecdotes are included as well as results of experiments to recreate the recipes. It's all very cool and gives such a perspective on society and family life.

Then there is the house. Last weekend I organized most of our books. I divided them into purely research and then fiction. Then I alphabetized by author the fiction books and re-shelved them. That took most of one day! The disorganization of the books was driving my crazy, so I think I actually gained some time out of that adventure.

But you see what I mean? I can either keep up the house or cook something. I can clean the kitchen or cut out Jim's arming doublet. I need to win the lottery. And Pennsic is at the END OF THIS MONTH! Where did the time go?

June ... Already

It's June already and I'm still wondering where May went.

I just went through my garb sorting things out for Pennsic.  Surprisingly, I'm in pretty good shape. I do need a new chemise or two, but it's not critical.  Now I just need Jim to sort through his stuff and figure out what he needs.  He has already requested an arming doublet, which I've started on.  I needed to repattern the old version slightly and I've gotten in the hemp canvas.  I do want to dye it first though.  It's a pretty plain khaki color.  You know, it looks like canvas.  I've got some navy dye and I'm going to go out to the Halcyon Yarn web site and see what colors they have in linen thread that I can make some quick trim.

Carla and I have begun experimenting with Irish dress, mostly 1500s or so.  A friend of our is a staunch Irish persona person and he's been having a bad influence on us.  Carla has already begun drafting out the Moy dress.  It would be cool to have one for Pennsic.  It's also fun working on a different time period.  I'm a bit burned out on sewing in general and trying something new is exciting.

Plague is Gone

And has been for awhile.  I've been really busy at work getting ready for my next TDY.  Kuwait and Qatar again.  I'm not looking forward to it as it looks like we'll have to stay in barracks this time around.

Anyway, back to the pea bread.  I found on line at Bob's Red Mill some pea flour!  I was surprised anyone would offer this, but apparently it's the fast way of making pea soup.  So I've ordered some, but experiments will have to wait until I'm back from my trip.

Carla and I are contemplating doing some period cooking research/experimental archeology at Pennsic this year.  We're pretty jazzed by the idea of brazier cooking so we want to play.  Of course, everyone gets to participate as food critics.  We'll have to work this out as we may use it to supplement the food plan.  We'll see.
